Walmart has begun to recycle plastic bags, and bottles since 2022. Walmart lets customers drop off plastic bags, bottles, and other items at any of their How2Recycle Store Dropoff bins. After being deposited, plastic will be recycled at the local recycling plant.
Walmart is among the Founding Members of Closed Loop Partnership. Here, several big chains joined together to tackle plastic bag waste.
The Beyond The Bag Challenge was created in collaboration with the Closed Loop Partnership. The Challenge reached out for innovative solutions to reduce plastic waste by reaching out to inventors.
Some of the winning ideas included reusable pouch kiosks, reward programs for bags, and materials to replace plastic, such as Domtar, PlasticFri and PlasticFri. They were made with cellulose fiber, among other bio-based products.
Walmart will support the Zero-Waste Initiative by using How2Recycle store drop-off bins for customers to drop off plastic bags and plastic containers.
No matter the brand of plastic, they can be dropped off at any How2Recycle bin located within a Walmart.
It is a huge step forward for customers, as most curbside recycling programs in towns, plastic bags and other films don’t get recycled correctly and end-up in landfills.
Walmart joined many others in selling reusable bags. These are found at the check-out lines so that customers can easily purchase them.
California, for example, has begun charging $10 per bag in an effort to discourage single-use bags.
Reusable bags are cheaper than using plastic bags for multiple trips.
Walmart is still a ways off, however, and they may not be able to stop giving plastic bags to their customers at check-out.
Walmart is also recycling plastic bags through its “Pack One More Item”, a campaign to reduce plastic waste.
To reduce the number of bags required, Walmart employees and customers are encouraged to place more bags per bag to reduce the number of bags required.
Walmart is committed to achieving zero waste by 2025. They have implemented various programs, and are participating in diverse campaigns.
Additionally, Walmart is working with its suppliers to reduce the overall amount of plastic waste that occurs due to their products.
Walmart wants its customers to know the basics of recycling, and to have the means to recycle.

Walmart encourages companies to adopt more sustainable designs in order to decrease single-use plastics.
