Unlike many grocery and retail stores, Safeway doesn’t have a uniform for their grocery store staff and pharmacy. Due to this, they require a dress code for their staff to look professional.
Safeway has a dress code that requires employees to wear simple, muted colours, tops and pants, with conservatively-colored hair. Safeway employees can’t have any facial piercings. Tattoos are also not permitted. Aside from mustaches and facial hair, it is prohibited to have any.
What Are the Safeway Dress Code Standards for Every Department?
While every department in Safeway adheres to a slightly different dress code, every department must dress according to the General Grooming Standards in Safeway’s handbook.
Safeway’s Dress Code requires that both men AND women dress appropriately. We have therefore divided our grooming standards lists accordingly.
For male employees, hair must be clean and well-combed. Ex. Temporary hair dyes can leach into hair or food. Hands and Nails: Hands and nails must be kept clean and washed at all times. Facial hair: Must be kept neat and clean. Employees are not permitted to wear beards, goatees or handlebar mustaches. Regular mustaches, however, are permitted. Safeway insists on good hygiene for all male employees. To prevent bad breath, unpleasant smells, and body odor, staff are asked not to bite nails, cough, or sneeze into their hands. Jewelry: All jewelry should be plain and professional looking. In order to avoid safety hazards, necklaces should not be worn under a shirt’s collar. It is not allowed to pierce the skin. Clothing: It is important to properly press, iron, clean, and maintain all clothes.
Employers with female employees
All female employees are required to have hair conservatively colored. Women with long hair should be trimmed short to keep it from contacting food or blocking vision. When nails are painted or hand-painted, the polish should be either a hard, clear, or semi-glossy color. It is important that fingernail length does not affect job function. Safeway asks that female employees have a reasonable level of cleanliness. Employees are requested to avoid biting their nails, coughing, sneezing, or any other unsanitizing behavior, in order to keep unpleasant smells and body odor to a minimum. For a professional appearance, all facial piercings should be avoided. For safety reasons, earrings should be smaller than usual and must be worn within the collar of a shirt.
Safeway applicants should be aware of the fact that Safeway hasn’t updated its dress code since 2008 and some locations are more open to personal expression.
However, employees should not show up to Safeway out of the dress code unless they have discussed certain styles with their store manager (ex. piercings, multi-colored hair, etc).
Can employees of Safeway wear leggings
Safeway employees have to wear dark colored slacks/dress pants.
Skirts, as long as the fabric is professional (ex. no denim or cotton skirts).
The Standard Dress Code does not allow denim, corduroy or cotton casual wear, leggings, and stretch pants. This dress code applies to all departments.
Do employees at Safeway have the right to wear shorts?

How does Safeway handle hair dye?
Safeway workers are generally not permitted to have hair colors that aren’t conservative. Any unnatural color, such as orange, blue or pink, would be subject to this rule.

If a potential Safeway employee wears unnatural hair color as a form of self-expression, they can consult their store manager and discuss the possibility of being able to keep their dyed hair.
