Every single day, millions of mailpieces are delivered to addresses across the United States by the United States Postal Service.
Sometimes packages are returned to the Post Office by carriers because they cannot be delivered, or due to bad weather.
It’s possible to delay going to the Post Office. You may wonder, “How long does USPS keep packages?” I’ve got the answer you seek just below.
How long will the USPS hold package in 2022
The United States Postal Service can hold mail for 15 days following delivery attempt. This applies to the majority of its mailing services. The USPS issues two notices in each instance. Within 15 days of the last notice, the package will be returned back to the sender.
How Do You Know If USPS Holds Your Package?
When your U.S. Postal Service carrier attempts to deliver a package but, for whatever reason, finds they cannot, they will leave a peach-colored PS Form 3849.
The PS Form 3849 is the Delivery Notice/Reminder/Receipt, and it’s the note that there is an item waiting for you in your local Post Office.
From my experience, the mail carrier will put the note up at the top and make sure it isn’t hidden under other items (or thrown away).
It could happen that you misplace it. It could be that you don’t remember to get your parcel.
You don’t have to be worried, as the Post Office will send a second and final notice, usually three to five working days following the attempted delivery.
This is the same PS Form 3849. However, there’s a box in the lower left corner that states “Final Notice”. Checking this will indicate that you have less time until the parcel can be picked up.
In the same space, the postal carrier may also write the date the holding period ends and that the parcel will return to the original address.
A huge exception to this 15-day rule is Priority Mail Express. Priority Mail Express items only hold for five days. Second/Final notices can be issued after three working days.
How do you find the location of your USPS packages?
If you live in a smaller town or city where there is only one Post Office location, then you likely know exactly where to go to get your pick-up mail.
It’s possible to wonder how you will find your nearest Post Office if there are multiple.
This information can be accessed in two different ways according to USPS.com.
First, you will find the USPS tracking page for your parcel. Once the tracking information has been updated, it will indicate where the item is.
If you don’t want to wait for that, you can also call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) and speak to a customer service representative.
What is the best way to pick up a USPS package?
Picking up your USPS package that is being held is simple.
Just make sure you bring along your PS Form 3849 and your valid photo ID (for some people, a driver’s license; for others, a passport or ID card).
They’ll ask you to sign your form if it’s not yet signed. Then, they will check your ID and make sure that the signatures, names, faces, and addresses are correct.
Are You able to have someone else pick up your parcel from The Post Office
It is possible to authorize another person to receive your package while it is still at the Post Office.
But, on the PS Form 3829 you’ll need to type something similar to:
(Named of the retriever) has my authorization to pick up mail at (Your Name).
When you are done, add your signature to the little note.
How Long Does USPS Hold Packages For A PO Box?
When you have an item that doesn’t fit in your PO Box, the Post Office leaves you a notification in your box that you have a parcel to pick up at the front counter.
Most cases will keep the item for at least 15 days. You will need to check the shipping service. This is similar to a normal package hold.
What Happens When You Forget to Pick Up a Package From the Post Office
USPS attempts, after the period ends, to send the package back.
Sometimes it may be impossible to return due to the absence of a return address.
Mail may be placed in this area to try and find the missing addresses.
The good news: If you miss your holding period, there is still a chance your package can make its way to you.
While it isn’t a certain thing (it might be en route to the sender), it’s possible.
If the package could not be returned to the sender, it may be in a Mail Recovery Center (one is in GA and one is in MN).
These packages will be scanned and, if valued at more than $25 they will remain on the shelf for an additional 60-day period. This is the time you can take action.
A Mail Recovery Center Request will be required. You should include all information regarding the parcel.
This covers the Barcode/Tracking number, the packaging size and all contents (as much detail as possible).
You can then wait. USPS will try its best to find your package and send it back.
The lesson is to not miss the initial 15-day deadline for collecting a package from your Post Office.

USPS reserves most undeliverable mail for 15-days and notify recipients twice, informing them that the package is available for collection at Post Office.
You will need your PS Form 3849 along with valid identification. Or you may send it to someone else, complete with your signature and permission note.
Why has my entire package been delayed till 2022
There are many reasons why your USPS tracking information may not be updated. These include inclement weather, busy buying seasons, missorted packages, or inclement weather.
What is the reason why Usps has not updated 2022?
USPS tracking numbers could not be updated due inclement climate, packages not getting scanned or deliveries to wrong addresses.
