Is Starbucks Closing Stores In 2022? (All You Need To Know)
Starbucks has closed hundreds of stores across North America and opened new ones because of its perseverance.
Starbucks Is Closing Stores in North America
Starbucks revealed in June 2020 that 400 of its locations would close in the USA and Canada within the next 18 month.
In addition, another announcement was made to close 100 US stores and 100 Canada locations, increasing the number of closings to 600.
Starbucks however will soon open additional stores, which will increase the number of North American Starbucks outlets.
Starbucks plans to close its stores in the dense areas of metros, where there is already a significant concentration of Starbucks.
Still, the exact locations that will be closed have not yet been announced, but they will also include high-traffic areas like malls and campuses.
This is because these areas are now experiencing a fall in traffic, due to both the pandemics and changes in customer preferences.
Before the pandemic the trend favors pick-up and delivery, which has only increased since.
Starbucks Is Closing Stores
Starbucks is closing hundreds upon hundreds of North America locations. This however does not mean that they have been downsizing, or are retrenchment.
Starbucks’ closures will not be followed by new Starbucks locations. These are mainly drive-thrus and stores-to-go.
So, the stores that are being closed will be replaced by better-performing models at different locations.
This shift is essentially due to two factors. Starbucks believes that the new formats of stores will be more efficient, and therefore more lucrative.
Second, these closings represent changes in customer preferences and needs for delivery or takeaway, curbside pickup, and delivery.
As an example, up to 80% of sales at the 15,000 Starbucks stores in the US come from orders-to-go.
This trend will dictate the future locations of Starbucks’ new stores.
The fundamental Starbucks values, convenience and quality, will be preserved in the new formats.
Is There a Plan for the New Starbucks Stores
Starbucks store closings are not new, as about 100 stores are closed every year based on performance.
However, recent closings are on a much larger scale and are driven by changing sales patterns and trends in customer behavior.
Effectively, closings of Starbucks stores and openings indicate a move away from Starbucks cafe models to takeaway and delivery places.
However, shoppers’ shopping choices change with the changing conditions of the pandemic and their ability to work remotely.
Starbucks stores saw a similar drop in morning commuters since the beginning of this decade.
This is offset by the mid-morning and afternoon customers at Starbucks.
Also, there’s been a shift in sales from urban metro to suburb populations. There has been an increase in the number of people who choose to drive than sit at a cafe.
Mobile ordering, Starbucks delivery through Uber Eats, and Starbucks mobile delivery are changing customer preferences.
Where will Starbucks be opening new locations?
The new Starbucks stores consider these changes in customer behavior, and the new locations will take them into account.
New Starbucks stores in the city will feature more double-lane drive-thrus and curbside pick up.
Also, the new locations will include new Starbucks pick-up stores where customers can only order and pay only through the Starbucks app.
Further, this is due to the increased online customer engagement with Starbucks during the pandemic, with millions of new mobile app users.
With that, ordering and payments exclusively through the mobile app makes the whole process much quicker and more streamlined.
A Starbucks Pick-up Store is also available at Penn Station, New York City.
Starbucks is also trying curbside pick-up, which is becoming very popular. Expect to see these formats more often.

That said, the new stores will be in locations and formats that reflect changing customer behavior and sales trends.
These trends suggest a move away from metros towards suburbs and cafés to delivery and takeout options.
