Although expansion of grocery stores can be difficult, expanding into other countries will require a different set of skills that most chains are simply not capable.
Aldi is a supermarket chain based in Germany. Aldi started in North America when it was founded in the 1970s. Although they now own over 2000 locations, Canada has remained untouched by Aldi’s discount merchandise.
Aldi is coming soon to Canada? An American expansion that has seen the company grow steadily might surprise some.
Is Aldi Coming To Canada In 2022?
Aldi is not planning to move to Canada and any Canadian cities by 2022. Many market analysts predict that the move will be inevitable. However, Aldi has not made any visible steps toward Canada or released statements regarding the possibility.
You’re probably wondering why they aren’t coming to the Great White North, whether public opinion desires Aldi in Canada or whether there is even room in the market for the chain – so keep reading, because I’ve got all the answers you need.
Why Isn’t Aldi Coming To Canada?
Aldi seems to have set its sights on the American discount market, and has ignored Canada for many reasons.
Aldi’s business model centers around the low cost of everyday foods, which keeps everyone’s homes and pantries stocked.
Aldi is able to keep their prices competitive with smaller chains in the U.S.
However, Canada’s grocery stores already offer a discount or budget option that cuts down on 40 percent of Canada’s grocery sales.
American shoppers might be impressed with Aldi’s grocery prices but Canadians may find it harder to wow them.
Aldi cares about the placement of its stores. This includes laying out some core requirements that it considers when looking for new locations.
Aldi has made it hard for shoppers to believe that they will find success in a market by keeping their operational costs as low as possible.
Then Aldi also has the example of their major rival (at least in Europe), Lidl. Lidl went as far to establish a Mississauga headquarters, hire staff and explore possible site options.
But Lidl then scrapped plans, closed the office and let go of everyone they hired. A few years later, Lidl instead opened their first store in the U.S. Aldi could use this cautionary tale.
Do Shoppers Want Or Even Need Aldi In Canada?
Aldi’s marketing machine has been so successful that Canadians want Aldi shops in their discount-oriented country.
Aldi Finds can help you do this. No doubt Canadians can find cheap flour or cereal or frozen veggies, but Aldi Finds like character pet beds, inflatable outdoor seating or exercise bikes – at crazy-low Aldi prices – would still draw shoppers.
Canada: Aldi Stores
Aldi can start off by visiting the Canadian capitals of Toronto and Vancouver. Together, the cities have 10.5 millions people. Canada’s population density being what it is, Aldi would likely stick to bigger cities and urban centers, especially at first.

Aldi has not indicated that they will be coming to Canada in any near future.
Aldi’s move to Canada will require more planning and research, as well as a lot of analysis.
